1st Phase:
Implementation based on original idea

Late September 2021 - Early March 2022

1st Phase: About

When we first started our project, we observed that there is a lack of support
for Hong Kong pre-retirees and retirees to prepare for their retirements or cope with challenges they may face in their retired lives through online research, street interviews with people over age 50 and interview with social worker.

Therefore, we aim at constructing a website to aid
pre-retirees and retirees in Hong Kong
with the purpose of...

1) Raising their awareness in retirement planning

2) Providing them information of accessible resources
relevant to retirement planning and needs in retired life

3) Delivering psychological knowledge that may help our target audience to tackle the psychological challenges when they are preparing for retirement or having a retired life.

3 components

are included in the website:

1) Guided self-help pack

Provide a series of questions in different aspects (lifestyle changes, social, transition, psychological, transition, health & financial) to guide our users to reflect, think and plan for their retirements. Advice are given based on their needs and concerns in their retirement as well as their progress of retirement planning. We hope to help our users to identify what they really want in their retired life and guide them to create a tailor-made retirement plan.

2) Useful psychological knowledge relevant to retirement

Introduce a variety of psychology theories and information to broaden our users’ understanding towards retirement and ease their worries and anxiety during their transition to retirement. It is hoped that their mental health and psychological well-being to be improved,
and on the other hand, raise their awareness in retirement planning.

3) Practical information and resources

about retirement planning and retired life in Hong Kong

We will gather information and resources about retirement planning, support and assistance that are provided by government or other organizations that are currently available in HK society.
Thus, our users can utilize the existing resources to better plan and live a fulfilling retired life.

- At the same time, we adopt social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram) as a tool to gain exposure to our target audience and to promote our project.
Posts about preparation for retired life, fun facts about retirement and simple psychological knowledge are posted every week to interact with potential users.-

However,
unexpected difficulties and challenges appear...

While we were working on the website content and the promotion on social media,
we discovered there are some limitations and difficulties which are hard to cope with.

1st Phase: Text

First, when building one of the components, guided self-help pack,
we encountered several issues in its design and content.

We found that it is hard to cater the needs of our user even though we have changed the format of this part from directive questions to reflective questions,
try our best to research and write useful advice.

In our pilot test, we interviewed our potential users with the prototype of guided self-help pack, however, the responses from our interviewees were not ideal.
From the result of the pilot test, our users are not that interested in the content of the guided self-help pack nor the advice provided despite they agree that the aspects included (lifestyle changes, social, transition, psychological, transition) are worth to reflect and think before their retirement. They are not motivated to spend time on preparing these aspects in their retirement. Besides, as different people have different concerns in retirement, it is difficult for us to provide advice that can fulfill users from a variety of backgrounds with different needs.

Second, the interaction with our potential users is not favorable.
As we set the target audience to be people between 55-65, and hope to deliver our service online, however, this does not accommodate their habits of receiving information. We have tried various kinds of approaches in our social media platform to interact with our potential users but failed. We could not gain much exposure in our target audience group. Promotion on social media (Facebook and Instagram) and the way to deliver information through website do not attract our target audience to access our services. As a result, it is ineffective for us to deliver our service or achieve our purpose through website under these limitations.
